This past Sunday I went for an impromptu day trip to northeastern Pennsylvania with one of my brothers. Our only goal was to head north out of Harrisburg until we saw the leaves start to change. It would seem that autumn color is unusually late this year.
So we hopped on 81N and wound through the mountains until Pine Grove, where we traded 81 for 209. If you’ve never taken 209, it runs through the heart of Pennsylvania coal country then on to the Poconos before hitting the Delaware Water Gap and ending up in the Catskills, I think. We opted to stop and stay around the Poconos so we could experience the autumn air on foot and not just spend the day confined to a car.
